My Followed By Band Of The Month

Over the end of last month and throughout this month I have aired some fantastic acts recently and I have picked out my next Followed by Band of The Month

Written In Kings

This dynamic, rock n' roll, folk inspired 5 piece have taken my followed by band of the month spot.   As soon as I checked out their music and came across 'Out Of The Fire', it was a delight. Such a beautifully written track with mesmerizing harmonies. I am loving the use of the harmonica also in this track in particular, one of my favorite instruments. The combination of gritty folk vocals and the gentle guitar riffs this song is so lovely on the ears and such a effortless song to play on the radio. Similarly in tracks such as 'Breathe' the passion really strikes out in their music with clear heart felt lyrics. Folk-Rock can be tried and failed a lot of the time but I think these guys have hit the nail on the head here and works so well. I am really excited to see what is coming next for these guys.

I did a lovely little interview with the boys, here's what they had to say!

1. Do you want to tell us little bit about yourselves and when and why  you started making music?
John and Sam started the band 5 years ago as a duo. Since then, we have been a full band for the past 3 years. We are driven by bands that have a passion for what they do and have a depth and a purpose to their music. The reason we still make music together today is because we love being in a band together, we love the brotherhood of it and the strength it gives each of us.
2. Who are your main musical influences?
A huge musical influence is a band from South Carolina called Needtobreathe. Seeing these guys perform is enough to give anyone the drive to pickup an instrument. Other influences include Bruce Springsteen, Kings of Leon, James Bay, Switchfoot and the obvious... Mumford and Sons. I guess what these bands have in common is that depth behind their lyrics and their ridiculous passion for what they do on stage.
3. I love the Folk Rock genre and it works so well with what you do, what inspired you to make music of this genre?
We honestly don't feel part of a genre. When Sam or John write a song, we pick up certain instruments that we feel fit the song, change guitar tones, think about the dynamics and whatever comes of that I guess is our genre... Truthfully though, we haven't mastered this just yet, it's too easy to get carried away with wanting to be a rock band, which doesn't always compliment the song.
4. Are you inspired by anything in particular when writing you’re music?
We're inspired every day by our faith, relationships, our day to day lives, the struggles that we go through as young men. The good news with this is that we all have struggles, we all go through the same stuff regardless of our sex, race, age etc, we all struggle. This means that people of all backgrounds hear something in our lyrics. To me (Nathan, the drummer) this is one of the best things about being in Written In Kings, is when someone comes up to you after a show and tells you that our lyrics really spoke to them.
5. You work with a few different instruments, including a harmonica; do you enjoy working with a variety to create your sound?
We love it! If we had more money, there'd be a lot more on stage with us!
6. Are you working on anything new at the moment?
So we've just released our single "Out of the Fire" which is doing great! Currently we're working on a video for that and have a heap of guide tracks done for what could become an album. We're looking to get in the studio over the next few weeks and just keep creating... Right now because of lack of funds we don't like to give ourselves strict deadlines for projects in case the money runs out half way through haha! We're perfectionists so a song is done when it's done, not when we can't afford to add anymore.
7. If you could collaborate with any artist who would it be and why?
The temptation to give you a joke answer is unbearable haha! But seriously, I would personally love to hear John's  vocals on a track with Bear Rinehart... that would be crazy! As for touring with an artist, we would love to hit the road with Kings of Leon but I don't know many bands that wouldn't like that, right?!
8. What festival would you most like to play?
I'd personally love to play South by Southwest or Austin City Limits, simply because Austin is one of the coolest cities we've been to as a band. We often talk goals and ambitions and festivals rarely come up, however, we have some serious Welsh goals which are to play at St David's Hall, Motorpoint Arena and one day the Millennium Stadium for a sold out show... we have already played at the Millennium for a beer festival which was incredible!

9. What are your plans for the near future?
Our plans are to head out on tour throughout the summer and gig as much as possible. As Dave Grohl once said, to be a great band you need to "play live, play live, play live".

Make sure you check out much more!
